 A Traveler's Guide to Springfield

Springfield is a city that is located in the center of the US state of Illinois. It is the capital and third largest city in the state. The city's motto is "The Home of Abraham Lincoln" because the former president lived in Springfield for a time. English is the official spoken language of Springfield.

The area around Springfield was settled in the early 19th century. It was originally named Calhoun in honor of John C. Calhoun, the Congressman from South Carolina. However, in 1832 Mr. Calhoun had become unpopular with the public and the name was changed to Springfield. The area around Springfield was good for farming and many settlers from Kentucky and even North Carolina moved there to start new lives. The city is located in the center of the state, and because of that it was selected to be the state’s capital. In 1837 Abraham Lincoln moved to Springfield to practice law. He lived there for twenty four years as a lawyer and aspiring politician. He only left Springfield because he was elected to be the president of the United States.

Springfield has a humid continental climate, which means hot summers and cool winters. Summer temperatures generally stay in the 80's Fahrenheit and winter temperatures can dip into the 30's Fahrenheit from time to time. Snowfall occurs periodically, but rainfall occurs year round, with most of the rain coming in the months of June through August.

The Hoogland Center for the Performing Arts is one of the largest performing arts centers in the state. It is home to the Illinois Symphony Orchestra, the Springfield Municipal Opera, the Springfield Theater Center, and the Springfield Ballet Company.

There are many historic sites of interest to see in Springfield. None are as popular as the Lincoln Home National Historic Site and the Lincoln Presidential Library. Artifacts and memorabilia from the live of the president are on display in these locations. Lincoln’s Tomb in Oak Ridge Cemetery is the final resting place of the late president.
