The architecture is distinctly Greek and it is one of the oldest standing structures in the world.

The city is the birthplace of the Olympic Games. The Summer Olympic Games were held in Athens as recently as 2004. The city constructed the Athens Olympic Stadium to house those games, and the stadium has become a tourist attraction in and of itself.
