Budapest Quick Facts
A Traveler's Guide to Budapest
Budapest is the capital and largest city of Hungary. As such it functions as the financial, economic, and transportation center for the country. The city is divided in half by the Danube River. The city's history can be traced back to Celtic times, but it wasn't until the 19th century that it finally united and became a recognized city.
Budapest has been called one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. The scenic Danube River has much to do with that, but the city's favorable climate contributes as well. Winter temperatures can dip below freezing occasionally, and summer temperatures rarely exceed 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
Budapest has some of the oldest and grandest buildings in all of Europe. One of the most popular buildings with tourists is the Hungarian Parliament building. Built after the neo-Gothic style, this building serves many federal purposes, including housing the Hungarian royal crown jewels. Castle Hill is an embankment on the Danube River that houses several old churches and museums. It has been recognized by UNESCO as certified historical sites.
Residents of Budapest would tell you that the most important site to see in the city is the Andrassy, a boulevard that can trace its origins back to the mid-19th century. It connects Elizabeth Square with the City Park. It is a collection of some of the grandest homes and mansions in the city.
For centuries Budapest has been famous for its thermal springs. Even the Romans built spas and bath houses in Pest. Today tourists can visit these locations and even relax in a thermal spring. Some of the most famous bath houses are the Gellert Baths and the Rudas Baths.
Budapest Ferihegy International Airport services Budapest and the surrounding areas. Because Budapest is the center of Hungary, all major highways in the country end/begin there, which makes travel around the country very convenient. Travel on the Danube River also makes different parts of the city readily accessible.
