 A Traveler's Guide to Naples

Naples is a city that is located on the southwestern coast of the country of Italy. It is the capital of the region of Campania and is one of the largest cities in the European Union. It is considered to be one of the most important cultural and historical cities in all of Italy. Italian is the primary spoken and written language in Naples.

The city was founded in the 9th century as a Greek colony and was named Parthenope. Later the name was changed to Neapolis, which is Greek meaning "New City". The Italian translation of Neapolis is Naples. Because the city was controlled by the Greeks for some time there are many Greek remnants in and around the city. The Romans took the city from the Greeks by the Romans and incorporated into the Roman Empire. Over the centuries the city has been under the control of other European nations such as Spain and France. All of this contributes to the very cosmopolitan feel of the city. For a time Naples was the second largest city in all of Europe behind only Paris.

During World War 2 the city was bombed heavily by Allies forces. The city rebuilt and the Italian government helped to rejuvenate the economy of the city and rebuild it back to what it was before.

There are several museums in Naples that are of significance. The Naples National Archaeological Museum is the primary museum in the city and is one of the most important museums for Roman artifacts anywhere in the world. This museum also houses many of the recovered remains from the destruction of Pompeii by the volcano Vesuvius.

Naples has a Mediterranean climate which means mild temperatures year round. Summer temperatures generally stay in the 70's or 80's Fahrenheit while winter temperatures rarely dip below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Summer is the dry season with scarce rain. Most of the areas rainfall occurs during the months of January through March.
