A Traveler's Guide to Saint Paul

Saint Paul is the capital of Minnesota and the second largest city in the state. The entire city lies on the northern bank of the Mississippi River and is next to Minneapolis, the state's largest city. In fact, the cities are so close together that they are often referred to as the "Twin Cities". The area was originally a settlement of native Americans, but was later incorporated into the Minnesota Territory in 1849. It is a business hub for companies such as Xcel Energy, Ecolab, and Lawson Software. The city, along with its twin Minneapolis, is one of the most literate cities in the country.

The city has a continental climate much like the states of the American mid west. Winters are cold and snowy and summers are frequently hot and humid. The city's location on the river increases the humidity in the air. Summer temperatures usually stay in the high 70's Fahrenheit and the winter temperatures can dip into the single digits Fahrenheit. Most of the precipitation falls in the summer months of June and July. Snowfall occurs the most in the months of December and January.

One of the biggest employers in the city is Ford Motor Company's Twin Cities Assembly Plant. The plant owns a dam on the Mississippi River which generates hydro-electric power for the plant and the city. The winter months are especially festive in Saint Paul because of the Saint Paul Winter Carnival. The city hosts ice sculpting competitions, treasure hunts, winter foods stands, and an ice palace. The most popular place to visit during the summer months, besides the river, is the Como Zoo and Conservatory. This zoo and conservatory are among the largest in the northern United States.

One of the most famous residents of Saint Paul is Charles M. Schulz, the creator of the Peanuts comic strip. He is memorialized downtown with a bronze sculpture depicting two Peanuts characters, Schroeder and Lucy.

The marquee event of the summer months is the Minnesota State Fair which is held in nearby Falcon Heights near the University of Minnesota. This fair is attended by visitors from all over the state as well as neighboring states and features carnival rides, food, and competitions.
