Traveler Advice on Thousand Oaks ?
A Traveler's Guide to Thousand Oaks
| Thousand Oaks is a city that is located in the southern region of the US state of California. It is located in Ventura County and is named after the many oak trees that grow in the area. In 2006 it was named one of Money Magazine's "Top 50 Best Places to Live in America". English is the primary language spoken in Thousand Oaks, although there is a significant percentage of the population that speaks Spanish. Thousand Oaks was originally a stop along the stagecoach route between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. In 1876 the Stagecoach Inn was built and is now a nationally recognized historic landmark. The city was incorporated in 1964 and was a planned community with very few problems with traffic or pollution. Thousand Oaks has a Mediterranean climate which means dry, warm summers and wet, cool winters. Summer temperatures generally stay in the high 70's to low 80's Fahrenheit and winter temperatures rarely dip below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. The area receives most of its rainfall during the months of January through March. There aren't any professional sports teams in Thousand Oaks, but the city has made youth sports leagues a high priority. There are several athletic complexes in the city that host everything from baseball, to soccer, to lacrosse. The city's little league baseball teams have competed for the World Championship recently and the area has become a popular spot for young baseball players. The Sherwood Country Club is in Thousand Oaks. Sherwood was designed by Jack Nicklaus and is host to a Tiger Woods golf event each year. The California Lutheran University fields a football team as well as several other sports teams. The closest major airports to Thousand Oaks are Los Angeles International Airport and Burbank Bob Hope Airport. Burbank offers domestic flights while LA International offers domestic and international to cities in the US, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East daily.
