Your information packet will list the ship’s satellite communications telephone number. Be sure to leave it with someone back home. They can get in touch with you in case of an emergency. Leave them the cruise line’s name, the ship’s name and your complete itinerary. Stress the "emergency" part, since ship to shore calls are very expensive. Time can really fly while the crew is trying to find you! Try to schedule calls home while in port, using a calling card. You'll get a better connection and the savings will be considerable.

	How do I stay in touch with the outside world while cruising ?
All cruise ships pick up newspapers at each port. Onboard, radiophones and satellite communications are available if needed. Remember however, satellite communications are very expensive to use. Consider getting an email account with an I.S.P. that provides access anywhere in the world. Most ships provide internet access for a fee. When in port, cyber cafes are everywhere. Finding one should not be that hard. The hardest thing when in port is finding a pay phone to make that long awaited call home. Crew members are often the first ones off the ship and take advantage of phones close to the docks. Take your own cell phone if possible and hope that the roaming charges are not too steep.
