Pack anything that you would need if you were vacationing at a resort hotel located in the same area or areas of your cruise itinerary.
Avoid over-packing. Read the dress code section of the literature mailed to you by the cruise line.

Probably. Unless you are on a very casual cruise line, there will still be a few dinners where formal clothes are appropriate. Usually, the last night of a cruise is a more formal night. On most seven-day cruises you will probably have two formal nights. At one time these nights required tuxedos or cocktail dresses. Today, formal is optional. if you have them you may want to bring them along. However, a nice dark suit or a smart dress are perfectly acceptable. If still in doubt, many cruise lines will rent you a tuxedo. Find out before you leave. Fewer passengers are dressing "formally" and even the dark suit and nice dress is being seen less and less. A sport coat and slacks are also widely accepted. Many cruise lines recommend more casual attire such as sport shirt and pants, except on formal night. Be sure to read the cruise packet or check their web page for your particular ship's guide for dressing comfortably and appropriately.

Always keep any items of value with you. Never put cash, jewelry, medication, travel documents, passports or anything irreplaceable in your checked baggage. Keep a list of the contents of your checked luggage, in your carry-on bag.
Often, luggage is not delivered to your cabin until after you have left for your first dinner. You may want to pack a change of clothes for that possibility.
Consider any "one-day" items. Anything that you would need to make it through a 24-hour day in case your luggage is late or missing.
Keep one and five dollar bills with you for tipping skycaps and porters. Purse, wallet or carry-on bag, whatever is handy and easy to get to.

Not anymore. Cruising is for everybody. While some ships are more dressy than others, casual attire is appropriate for almost any cruise. Choose the cruise that you feel most comfortable with. If you enjoy dressing up, there will be several chances to do it. If not, no one will care if you don't have on a jacket and tie. The idea on a cruise is to relax.

If your bags are missing at the airport, notify the airline immediately. You should have a list of everything in your checked baggage in your carry-on bag. Make a copy for them to use to file a claim. If the cruise line supposedly transferred your luggage to the ship, but it never made it to your cabin, you’ll need to work with the line first.
