A Traveler's Guide to Bellevue

Bellevue is a city that is located in the northwestern inland portion of the US state of Washington.  It is one of the fastest growing cities in all of the northwest and is a suburb of the greater Seattle metropolitan area.  It has been selected as one of Money Magazine's top places to live in America as recently as 2008.  It has also been recognized as one of the best places to start a business in America.

The city gets its name from the French word meaning "beautiful view".  It was founded in 1869 by William Meydenbauer and was incorporated in 1953.  The city remained rural until the opening of the Washington Floating Bridge in 1940.  This made Seattle much more accessible and enabled residents of Bellevue to commute there with must more convenience.

Bellevue has a marine north-western climate, which means cool temperatures year round.  Summer temperatures stay in the 70's Fahrenheit and winter temperatures rarely dip below freezing.  Most of the area's precipitation comes in the months of January through March.

Bellevue Square is the largest shopping center in the city and one of the largest in the area.  It opened in 1946 and has grown and expanded along with the city.  It is a microcosm of the city's growth over the last half century.  Millions of people visit the center each year.

Every year the Bellevue Arts and Crafts Fair is held.  This is a display of local and international artists in downtown Bellevue.  The Bellevue Sculpture Exhibition is held twice year in Downtown Park and displays three dimensional works of art from artists from all over the country.  The annual Strawberry Festival in Bellevue features food, arts, crafts, and live musical performances.

The Bellevue Arts Museum is one of the largest in the area and is home to several prominent works of art from local and foreign artists.

The closest major airport to Bellevue is Seattle International Airport.  It services all major domestic and international carriers with flights to the US, Canada, Asia, and Mexico daily.
