A Traveler's Guide to Calgary
Calgary is a city that is located in the province of Alberta in Canada. It is the largest city in the province and is a popular spot for winter sports and ecotourism.Because of its northern location, Calgary has been classified with a humid continental climate, which means warm summers and cold winters. The seasons are very distinct. Summer temperatures generally stay in the 70's to low 80's Fahrenheit but winter temperatures can dip well below freezing for several days on end. Snowfall is very common in the winter months, and the summer months can see quite a bit of rainfall from year to year.
Visitors to Calgary have remarked that it is a modern city that still has the feel of an old west city. Calgary is the center for the country music industry in Canada. It has even been called the "Nashville of the North". Calgary has also become very metropolitan because of all the immigrants that have traveled to it over the years. It is now home to some of the finest international restaurants in all of Canada.
There are several cultural venues in the city, such as the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, which hosts frequent live performances. There are many annual festivals and celebrations in Calgary that are worth noting. The Calgary International Film Festival is the second largest film festival in Canada. The Greek Festival celebrates the Greek population of the city. The FunnyFest Calgary Comedy Festival, the Folk Music Festival, and the GlobalFest are all very popular annual cultural events in the city.
Because it is so close to the Canadian Rockies Mountain Range, the city of Calgary has become a very popular destination for winter sports. It even hosted the 1988 Winter Olympics. The Canada Olympic Park in Calgary has facilities for snowboarding, ski jumping, luge, and cross-country skiing. In the warm summer months fishing and golf are very popular in the lakes and golf courses that are spread throughout the region.
