Vacation in Europe is almost on everybody’s bucket list. From the picturesque mountains of Switzerland to the beautiful lakes to the pristine painting-like scenery of Venice, travelling to Europe is like a dream come true. While travelling in Europe is expensive, some countries are easy on the pocket like Hungary, Greece, Bulgaria, Turkey, Albania, Czech Republic etc. They all fall expense including food, accommodation and local travelling under 60 USD per day.

Bulgaria it is

The cheapest country to visit in Europe with natural beauty and as well as cultural heritage in Bulgaria. The name Bulgaria is derived from the Bulgars, a tribe of Turkic origin that founded the country. Bulgaria is a Balkan nation that lies in the eastern portion of the Balkan Peninsula in southeastern Europe. Founded in the 7th century, Bulgaria is one of the oldest states on the European continent. Like other nations of the Balkan Peninsula, Bulgaria claims a mix of Eastern and Western cultures, as the region was a battleground for Thracians, Persians, Celts and ancient Macedonians; stability came when the Roman Empire conquered the region.

What’s the geography and climate like?

The capital city of Sofia is in the centre of the Balkan region, and in nearly every other respect it occupies the central position within Bulgaria. With more than one million inhabitants, Sofia has three times as many people as the next largest cities, Plovdiv and Varna.

Bulgaria has a moderate continental climate, the average annual temperature is 10.5 °C though it actually ranges from the highest being 45 ˚C to as low as -38˚C.

Food and travel

Daily food expenses here range anywhere between 5-10 USD whereas the accommodation expenses range from 11 to 15 USD approx, so an approximate budget for a day falls anywhere between 20- 30 USD. This is, of course, the minimum travel expense budget. Overall the food, commutation and living expenses are much cheaper compared to the other European countries.

Places to go

The places of interest mainly include The Srebarna Nature Reserve, a freshwater lake and bird sanctuary adjoining the Danube River, was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983 and then placed on UNESCO’s endangered list in 1992 after an environmental decline.

The main attractions though are the popular Black Sea resorts. Beyond Sofia and Sunny Beach, head up to the Rila mountains. Visit the Seven Rila Lakes and stay at one of the numerous mountain lodges that host stunning overlooks of the lakes and mountains for a price that won’t break the bank. Head to the city of Plovdiv for beautiful examples of Roman architecture and visit one of the many cultural museums there.
